Butter an 8x8 inch casserole dish well.

Spread potatoes evenly in the dish.

Mix milk, cream, salt, mustard, pepper, and nutmeg in a pot.

Heat mixture on medium-high, stirring until almost boiling (5-10 minutes).

Add cheddar cheese, lower heat and stir until melted.

Pour cheese sauce over potatoes.

Let cool slightly.

Place butter slices on top.
